Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows is an okay film. It is an okay Johnny Depp film. It is an okay Tim Burton film.

It's these three things that I feel lets it down as a whole. It's inherent meh-ness seems to stem from the fact that from what I gather, Depp and Burton are huge fans of the original TV series and in their defence this does come through. It does lead the film to be a tad messy in some places as they attempt to cram in homage after homage and encapsulate the feel of a show that had five years to tell stories.

I want to firmly state that this is not a bad film. It is fun and wacky and beautifully shot and the seventies feel is perfectly captured. However, both Depp and Burton have done better and the film does suffer from being being too enthralled with its inspiration.

It is still worth a watch though, especially for Eva Green's sublime performance (though I will admit I have very little tolerance for obsessed-lover-motivation).
