Review: Turtles Are Surprisingly Fast Swimmers

Endearing Japanese spy comedy about a lonely housewife

Picture from here

Juri Ueno plays Suzume Katagura a young woman so boring and ordinary that her own husband works abroad and barely sees her and when he calls it's only to ask ho his pet turtle is doing.

Breaking through the monotony, Suzume answers an advert to become a spy and soon finds herself with a gang of eccentric sleeper agents who all try to blend in and be as ordinary as possible to avoid detection. Suzume throws herself in wholeheartedly and finds new purpose in her life. Of course the joke is that shes doing everything exactly as she did before except now she is over thinking everything, trying to find the most "normal" and "ordinary" ways to do things.

Its a gentle little film and Ueno is an engaging protagonist so if you are looking for something to lift you up a bit and knock the wind from you its a pretty safe bet.
