Sorry for the lack of posts lately! So this is the 100th blog post, cupcakes and balloons all round. What better way to mark this than a article published by Culturefly!

Reading this online you’re probably already aware of how much you rely on electricity and power. No power means no cars or planes, no TV or radio, no phone system, no medical equipment, no freezers and no food storage systems. Things would get pretty difficult pretty quickly.



Sky One’s Revolution is a new US drama that shows pretty much exactly that. Set fifteen years after the entire world’s power supply just cut out with no warning or explanation. Things devolve quickly and the US is now run by ruthless militia groups that monopolise food and weapons while most people live in small villages scraping by on what they can grow or hunt. Needless to say, it isn’t the cheeriest of places.

Review: Cloud Atlas

I was super excited to see this film but felt the need to wait a while before I wrote about it as it struck me as a piece of work that benefits from a good deal of reflection.

Top 5 Pixar Shorts

 Feeling a lot of love for shorts recently and Pixar release a short film with every new theatrical release. I'm not too thrilled by the fact that a lot of the stuff they have lined up are sequels but we shall wait and see.

A Rant of Sorts

I love film. That much should be evident. I love writing about film, reading about film, talking about film and obsessing over film but most of all I love watching film for without doing that I couldn't do any of those other things.

So what happens when I can't watch a film.

One of the films I have been dying to see this year is Cloud Atlas, released in the US in October 2012 and opening in the UK this Friday. On it's opening weekend it should be widely available right? Right!?

No. Firstly the shitty excuse for a cinema down the road isn't showing it at all. neither is the nearest large cinema, VUE, in Oxford. The VUE in Reading is only showing it at 3.00pm and 5.00pm during the week a tricky ask for people who are working all day.

This reflects how the film was marketed in the US too, little advertising and overall not pushed as much as the bigger budget Oscar contenders and it isn't unique to Cloud Atlas. Hollywood thrives on money and internal politics, often to the detriment of gorgeous pieces of work and this filters down to the audiences.

So don't expect a review of Cloud Atlas soon, it might take a while to find it.

"Seriously, that's the ending?" and other reactions

A while ago I watched Bill Paxton's 2001 film, Frailty, a story of religious fanaticism, a highly dysfunctional family and an unreliable narrator. It's twisty-turny kind of a plot but its the ending I really want to talk about, it reminded me of another film. This one, released in 1998, is Fallen, a supernatural thriller and like Frailty it leaves the viewer somewhat...deflated. Needless to say there are spoilers ahead.
